The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe is the all-new hybrid model from the 2021 Jeep Wrangler lineup and comes with a 2L turbocharged inline-4 motor coupled with an electric motor putting out a combined 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. Available in three trim configurations, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe comes at a base MSRP of $47,995 for the Sahara trim and goes all the way to $53,815 for the High Altitude trim. With the hybrid powertrain under the hood, the 2021 Wrangler 4xe manages to give an electric-only range of 25 miles and a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 lbs. Standard 4WD drivetrain system and a 0-60 mph time of 6 seconds make it quite an excellent choice too.

2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe

Available with a lease price of $452 per month for the base Saharara 4xe trim with a 10% downpayment including the $1,495 destination charge, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe is also one of the most capable off-roaders on sale in the United States due to the inclusion of a part-time 4WD system and 8-speed automatic transmission as standard. The interior and exterior of the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe also remain unchanged in comparison to the regular 4-door Jeep Wrangler. Competing with the likes of the 2021 Ford Escape PHEV and the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime, we will find out how well the 2021 Wrangler 4xe turn out in this in-depth review.

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe is an all-new moniker from Jeep and is also the first off-road hybrid SUV from the legendary American SUV manufacturer. Available for sale at a base selling price of $47,995, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe comes in three trim configurations, with the price going all the way to an MSRP of $53,815. Coming with the 2L turbocharged inline-4 motor mated to an electric motor, the 2021 Wrangler 4xe manages to give out 375 hp and class-leading 470 lb-ft of torque. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe retains the same design and dimension as the 2021 Wrangler Unlimited and the 12 exterior colors and 2 interior colors are offered too. If you wish to lease out your ride, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe can be had for a lease price of $452/month, with an estimated APR  of 5.208% for a 48-month term duration. There are lucrative financing options as well with the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe. With a down payment of $4,949(including the destination charge of $1,495), you can have the 2021 Wrangler 4xe with an estimated monthly payment of $807. Since the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe is an all-new model, the 5-year cost of ownership cannot be found yet. However, we expect it to be somewhere close to $50,000, which is quite good. The miles per dollar ratio is also expected to be close to 8.

2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe SUV Pricing and Features

8.0/10

"We like the idea of staying close to the Wrangler’s simple roots while keeping the price towards the low end of the range."- Caranddriver

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe is available in three trim configurations, namely Sahara, Rubicon, and High Altitude. Available for sale at a base MSRP of $47,995, the 2021 Wrangler 4xe is an all-new trim on offer from Jeep and comes with a 2L turbocharged inline-4 motor mated to an electric motor, both of which combines to give 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe SUV Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

The J.D. Power Report sources its responses and rating from actual customers of a particular vehicle. While the SUV has a capable and rugged quality and even a well-known name, it falls short on long term reliability and even customer engagement. The Wrangler has been rated 78 points on the J.D. Power review. While the SUV misses out by quite a bit on its driving experience and the dealership response, it has an exceptional resale value.

Quality and Reliability

81 (Great)

Driving Experience

73 (Great)

Resale

90 (Best)

Dealership Experience

67 (Average)

The Jeep Wrangler is an extremely well-rated SUV. The dealership experience seems to be a bit lacking, maybe pointing towards the lack of deals and discounts for the price point being too high. The reliability of the Wrangler is rather attractive. The resale value is one of the best in the market, which is particularly due to the great response the SUV gets in the resale market and the low depreciation. The driving experience of the SUV seems to be lacking on normal roads.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

The Jeep Wrangler has some great attributes in its ownership. The SUV also amounts to quite a low profile on the cost to own. Particularly owing to its low depreciation and maintenance. Below is a cost analysis of the SUV for 5 years of ownership.

Warranty

The hybrid powertrain might be all-new for the Wrangler but the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe will be offered with identical warranty packages that are offered with the rest of the Jeep lineup so the 2021 model is expected to be backed up by your regular array of limited warranties, which will be quite necessary especially considering the number of complaints the 2020 model of the regular Wrangler has been receiving.

The Warranty package for the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe is as follows:

Criteria

Period

Basic Warranty

3 years/ 36,000 miles; whichever is earlier*

Powertrain & Hybrid components Warranty

5 years/ 60,000 miles; whichever is earlier*

24-hour Roadside Assistance

5 years/ 100,000 miles; whichever is earlier*

Rust-Through Protection

5 years/ 100,000 miles; whichever is earlier*

Although the warranty might not be the best in its segment, it is quite good especially if you take into consideration the fact that this all-new hybrid Jeep has no direct competitors in the segment, and its conventional gasoline-powered rivals offer very similar warranty packages.

Miles per Dollar

The Wrangler 4xe is expected to consume a lot less fuel than the regular Wrangler range. We do not have any official figures yet but the SUV is expected to cost around $1,800 per annum for fuel costs for 15,000 miles of usage per year. That translates to just about 12 cents per mile, which is equivalent to around 8 miles per dollar, which is rather affordable.

2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe SUV Buying Advice

Available in three trim configurations, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe starts at a base MSRP of $47,995 and goes all the way to $53,815. However, the base 2021 Wrangler 4xe Sahara turned out to be the most value for money trim of the lot due to the inclusion of a few important features like the automatic LED headlights, single-zone automatic climate control system, leather-wrapped steering wheel, 9-speaker Alpine premium audio system, and a host of optional driver-assistance features like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, etc.

2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe SUV Engine and Performance

"It has a turbocharged four-cylinder engine plus hybrid components that provide 375 horsepower plus an estimated 25 miles of all-electric range."- Edmunds

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe gets the most significant update in the engine and performance division. This all-new PHEV SUV comes with a 2L turbocharged inline-4 gasoline engine mated to an electric motor, putting out a combined 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. This hybrid motor comes mated to an 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission and a part-time 4WD drivetrain system. There is also a lithium-ion battery with 17.3 kWh of capacity.

2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe comes with a hybrid powertrain

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe gets a leading link front suspension and trailing arm rear suspension with coil springs on all four corners. As a result, the 2021 Jeep Wranger 4xe turned out to be one of the best offerings of the segment in terms of off-road ability. Even the ride quality was also acceptable, both in terms of highway riding as well as at slow city speeds. However, the body roll was quite high when taking corners quite enthusiastically. The steering also lacked a bit of feel and feedback. In comparison to the regular 2021 Wrangler Unlimited, the 2021 Wrangler 4xe was a tad bit stiffer, helping it to be slightly better off-roads.

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe managed to do the 0-60 mph acceleration test in just 6 seconds, making it one of the fastest-accelerating SUVs of the segment. However, the quarter-mile time and top speed of the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe haven't been reported yet. When it comes to the braking performance, we were slightly disappointed with the braking bite on offer. The 12.9" front rotors and the 13.6" rear rotors are also quite small for an SUV that weighs 5,222 lbs. The 60-0 mph braking distance hasn't been measured. In comparison, we felt the braking performance of the regular 2021 Wrangler Unlimited to be better, with a 60-0 mph distance of 128 feet.

"The 17.0-kWh battery pack is said to provide up to 25 miles of electric-only driving, but Jeep says that's enough for a few hours of low-speed off-roading."- Caranddriver

With the inclusion of a hybrid powertrain, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe is expected to come out with the segment-leading gas mileage figures. However, the city, highway, and combined gas mileage haven't been revealed by the manufacturer yet. Neverthless, we expect the 2021 Wrangler 4xe to return close to 50 MPGe of combined gas mileage.

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe also comes with the same 17.2-gallon fuel tank capacity, which is identical to the other 2021 Jeep Wrangler trims on offer. In comparison, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler offers a combined gas mileage of 20 MPG, and the most powerful 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 offers an estimated combined gas mileage of just 15 MPG. In comparison, the expected combined gas mileage of 50 MPGe on offer from the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe is quite an impressive number.

"Though there are many controls, the layout is refreshingly intuitive."- Edmunds

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe comes with the same interior design and features as the regular 2021 Jeep Wrangler. Available for sale at a base MSRP of $47,995, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe comes with two interior color combinations, namely black and brown. Other interior features like an automatic climate control system, leather upholstery, remote start system, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and touchscreen infotainment system are offered as well. When it comes to the interior space on offer, the 2021 Wrangler 4xe comes with the best in class headroom and impressive legroom for the front passengers. However, the shoulder room of 55.7" turned out to be the lowest of the lot.

The rear seat space of the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe was quite excellent too, with the best in class 41.7" headroom and 38.3" legroom. Even the shoulder room of 55.7" was also quite impressive for the segment. There is a 27.7 cu ft of cargo space too, which helps to shove in all the cargo for a weekend getaway. Even though the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe misses out on many standard interior features like heated seats and heated steering wheel, these can be added through the Cold Weather Group, which is available for an additional MSRP of $995.

"Its retro design harkens back to the World War II-era military vehicle."- Caranddriver

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe comes with the same exterior design as the 2021 Wrangler Unlimited. The front view of the 2021 Wrangler 4xe looks quite masculine due to the inclusion of the automatic LED headlights with LED DRLs, a blacked-out front bumper, and 7-slot grille, and the best in class height and ground clearance of 73.6" and 10.1". As a result, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe looks nothing like the competitors and this massive size also helps the 2021 Wrangler 4xe to conquer hard off-road sections with utmost ease.

2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe looks bold and masculine

Available in 12 exterior colors, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe also retains the side and rear profile of the 2021 Wrangler Unlimted. Coming with squared-out wheel arches and blacked-out side mirrors and door handles, the 2021 Jepp Wrangler 4xe's side profile takes forward the ethos of the marque. The rear also looks quite beautiful, even with a utilitarian design language, due to the LED taillights, rear-mounted 20" alloy wheels, and extended wheel arches, making it looks more massive. Other features like multiple soft top and hard top colors, mesh sunbonnet and solid sunbonnet by Mopar, and black tubular side steps are offered for an additional price too.

2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe SUV Safety

7.0/10

"To make matters worse, Jeep offers only a handful of optional driver-assistance features but none of the high-tech equipment that we expect to see on vehicles with price tags stretching into the $40,000-plus"- Caranddriver

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe hasn't been crash-tested by the NHTSA and IIHS yet. However, the regular 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited received an overall frontal crash test rating of 4-stars and a rollover crash test rating of 3 stars. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited also received a good rating in most of the subsections of the IIHS crash test, barring the small overlap front: driver side and headlights section. However, it wasn't selected as the top safety pick by the IIHS.

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe misses out on most of the driver-assistance features as standard, similar to that of all the other 2021 Wrangler models. However, many driver-assistance features like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, etc are offered with optional packages like the Safety Group for an MSRP of $995 and the Advanced Safety Group for an MSRP of $795. However, other basic safety features like ESC with roll stability control, ABS with driveline traction control, side-impact beams, airbags, and Parkview backup camera are offered as standard.

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime is available for sale at a base MSRP of $38,100 and comes with a lower 302 hp 2.5L naturally aspirated engine mated to an electric motor. Even though the performance is lower than the 2021 Wrangler 4xe, the 0-60 mph time is superior in the 2021 RAV4 Prime, coming in at 5.7 seconds. The shoulder room was also better in the 2021 RAV4 Prime. However, if you are looking for a more capable off-road SUV that can also double up as a comfortable and fuel-efficient daily driver. the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe is an unbeatable proposition, even at a price tag that is higher by close to $10,000.

2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe vs 2021 Ford Escape PHEV

The 2021 Ford Escape PHEV has lot o things going for it. It is better in terms of ride quality and offers car-like driving dynamics too. Along with that, the towing capacity of 3,500 lbs is on par with the 2021 Wrangler 4xe and the interior feels more premium too. It also gets more interior, infotainment, and driver-assistance features as standard. However, the 2021 Ford Escape PHEV is not the ideal choice if you intend to go off-road trails. The poor ground clearance and FWD drivetrain layout will be dealbreakers too. If you are not after an off-road machine, the 2021 Ford Escape PHEV, which is available for an MSRP of $33,040, is a compelling package.
