While cars like the Jeep Wrangler are known for extreme hardcore off-road capabilities, it is cars like the Land Rover Defender bring in comfort, luxury, and premium experience in addition to supreme off-road capacities.

The Land Rover Defender has always impressed us with its in-cabin experience, driving dynamics, and capabilities and the car is all set to take that to the next level with the recent 2022 update. The 2022 Land Rover Defender comes with a primitive, boxy design language but has a hint of the modern styling elements which make it a good-looking and attention-grabbing vehicle.

With this being said, the 2022 Land Rover Defender has been launched and this new model not only boasts an attractive design language and great interiors, but will also be available with several highly powerful, reliable, and capable powertrain options. However, the minimalistic design will be retained which has made it one of the most elegant and iconic car interiors in the segment. With that said the 2022 Defender takes against the likes of Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and the Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

For 2022 Land Rover has added a 518-hp supercharged V-8 to its two-door Defender 90 and four-door Defender 110. They'll go on sale in the summer starting at $98,550 for the two-door and $101,750 for the four-door—that's approximately double their starting prices. The Defender 90's $49,050 base price is up by $1600 for 2022, while the 110's $51,850 starting price remains the same. A 3.0-liter inline-six is available on more expensive models, which start at $60,850 for the 90 X-Dynamic S and $66,450 for the 110 SE. All models, including the new V-8, are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive, Land Rover says the two-door will sprint to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds with a top speed of 149 mph. As for the infotainment, the 2022 Defender will have a new option of a curved 11.4-inch touchscreen, with a 10.0-inch screen remaining standard.

For this year’s model, there is an addition of two extra trains, namely the V8 and V8 Carpathian Edition. These trims bring in a much more powerful V8 engine to the Defender lineup which was usually seen in the Range Rover lineup. Thus the Defender is much more powerful than the previous year.

2022 Land Rover Defender Engine and Performance

The 2022 Defender is powered by a standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Of course, every model features four-wheel drive and locking differentials for navigating treacherous terrain. The Defender is also available with a 3.0-liter inline-six which utilizes an electric supercharger and 48-volt hybrid system. Buyers looking for additional performance can opt for the 518-hp supercharged V-8, which Land Rover claims can hustle the Defender to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds.

Unlike its predecessor, the Defender has a unibody construction versus a body-on-frame setup, and it replaces the old solid axles with a fully independent suspension. The base suspension utilizes coil springs, but it can be upgraded with air springs that enable adjustable ride height. The Defender has 11.5 inches of ground clearance and the ability to ford through 35 inches of water, which exceeds both the Jeep Wrangler's maximum clearance and its wading ability.

The 2.0L engine under the hood of the Defender is one of the most powerful units in the segment. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler's 3.6L V6 mill ranks second with its 285 ponies and 260 lb-ft of twisties. The Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro's 4.0L V6 engine is the biggest displacement engine in the class yet belts out the meekest power figures.

The 2021 Land Rover Defender with its base 2.0 engine does 0-60 in 7.7 seconds. The Defender provides enough grunt to overtake any other car on the highway with ease. The Defender 2.0T will have a top speed of 119 mph. Move over to the more powerful 3.0L twin-charged inline-6 engine and the Land Rover Defender P400 reaches from 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds. The mild-hybrid system assists by compensating for the turbo lag, making sure you have plenty of torque even at low revs.

2022 Land Rover Defender Fuel Economy

The EPA's fuel economy ratings for the various Defender models are fairly similar regardless of what's under the hood. The 90 model with the four-cylinder receives ratings of 18 mpg city and 21 highway. Step up to the six-cylinder engine and the 90's city rating drops to 17 mpg but the highway rating goes up to 22. The 110 model with the six-cylinder engine has the same estimates as the six-cylinder 90. The EPA hasn't yet released fuel economy numbers for the new V-8 variant.

The Jeep Wrangler's fuel efficiency outshines the entire segment in terms. The Jeep Wrangler is capable of doing 22 MPG in city traffic conditions. Considering that the Wrangler is a full-sized off-roader, the fuel efficiency surely is really impressive. However, the Defender gets the biggest fuel tank of the lot and in turn, offers a better range between the fuel stops.

2022 Land Rover Defender Interior

The Defender's cabin walks the line between premium and utilitarian, with just enough design cues from the rest of the Land Rover lineup to make those familiar with the brand feel right at home. Exposed rivets in the door panels add a particularly rugged appearance, and a magnesium beam that runs the full width of the dashboard isn't entirely cosmetic—it's also structural.

Under the infotainment display, a trapezoidal extension of the dashboard provides a place for buttons and switches for the climate-control system and driving mode. The shift lever and ignition switch are also mounted on this center stack rather than the center console. In some models, the center console can be flipped back to create a jump seat between the driver and passenger, similar to a three-across bench in some full-size pickup trucks.

Cargo space behind the rear seat is somewhat limited, but on par with rival off-roaders such as the Jeep Wrangler; the rear seats can be folded to open up a much larger cargo bay, but those seeking to haul people and gear may want to look at the larger Land Rover Discovery or invest in a roof-top cargo carrier.

The Defender's dashboard sports a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system that runs a new interface for Land Rover called Pivi Pro; a larger 11.4-inch display is optional. Compared to the rest of the Land Rover lineup's Touch Pro Duo interface, the Defender's system relies on a single touchscreen instead of two, offers quicker response times, and can get OTA software updates.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard, as is an in-dash navigation system, a six-speaker stereo, and an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot. Both 10- and 14-speaker Meridian stereo systems are optional features and buyers of higher-end Defenders receive a digital gauge cluster and a head-up display.

As for the competitors, the 4Runner takes the lead in terms of cargo space but loses out in the interior space part to both the Defender and the Wrangler. While the leg space on offer in all the three SUVs upfront is similar the rear leg space is where the Defender and the Wrangler outshine the 4Runner.

2022 Land Rover Defender Exterior

The 2022 Land Rover Defender was designed from scratch and gets a fresh and modern design language. The car looks boxy and has several tweaks to give it a rugged and strong character. The color options complement the design of the vehicle and everything has been designed or built on purpose. The vehicle boasts tremendous off-road capabilities and gets functional mods on the exteriors.

Overall, the new Defender looks smart and the build quality too is impressive. The two-door version of the vehicle looks compact and extremely modern. The alloy wheels are large and go well with the design. The rear on the other hand may not be liked by everyone. The tailgate-mounted spare wheel looks nice and the square-shaped LED taillights gel in well with the design of the car.

Compared to its rivals, the 2022 Land Rover Defender looks simple and sophisticated. In terms of exterior dimensions, The vehicle is significantly larger than the rivals which gives it a better road presence, capabilities, and interior space. While the high ground clearance on the Defender as compared to the competitors definitely transpires into more potent off-road manners.

2022 Land Rover Defender Safety

As the 2022 model is yet to be tested for ratings we will take the 2021 model year data to draw a picture of what to expect in terms of safety from the 2022 Land Rover Defender. The 2021 Land Rover Defender came equipped with all of the modern safety features that you would expect from a vehicle of the segment and more. The NHTSA and the IIHS are yet to test the Defender. Regardless, the modified D7 aluminum chassis is claimed by the chief designer Gerry McGovern to be one of the strongest ever seen on a Land Rover.

Apart from numerous claims regarding its structural rigidity, the Defender has also been praised for its suite of safety and driver-assist features. Standard active safety features like lane departure warning, automated emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control are all offered as standard in the Defender.

Some of the most eminent safety features on the 2021 Land Rover Defender were:

  • Electronic Stability Control(ESC) with Roll Stability Control
  • ABS And Driveline Traction Control
  • Side Impact beams
  • Dual-Stage Driver And Passenger Seat-Mounted Airbags
  • Front Collision Warning with Automated Emergency Braking
  • Blind Spot Monitoring with Cross-Traffic Alert And Trailer Detection
  • Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist
  • Front And Rear Parking Sensors
  • Tire Specific Low Tire Pressure Warning
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Dual-stage Driver and Passenger Front Airbags
  • Airbag Occupancy Sensor
  • Curtain 1st And 2nd Row Airbags

Moreover, the optional Driver Assist Package arms the Defender with Lane Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Rear Collision Warning. Apart from that, the Defender can also be equipped with LED lights that keenly monitor the surroundings and a 3D surround-view camera that gives you an unobstructed image of the Defender along with its surroundings.

2022 Land Rover Defender Competition

2022 Land Rover Defender Vs 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

The Jeep Wrangler is much cheaper than the Defender. However, it is not as practical as the Defender. The stiff suspension setup of the Wrangler gives it great off-road capabilities, however, it feels a bit harsh on the normal roads. The Defender can handle the off-road tracks and the normal city driving conditions with the same poise. So if money is not an issue then go for Defender else Jeep Wrangler would be able to satiate you well enough.

2022 Land Rover Defender Vs 2021 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro

The Defender is a more modern and luxurious option to go with and also has a bigger heritage push. Both of the cars are better in their own ways, the prices of these cars are somewhat similar. The Toyota 4Runner TRD gets a better value as being a Toyota, the reliability and maintenance become very easy. On the other hand, the Land Rover will come in handy in case you like to take the roads less taken! So it all boils down to the reliability of the two brands in this comparison and Toyota is the clear winner if you are looking for a fuss-free ownership experience.

2022 Land Rover Defender Final Verdict

If you are someone who is looking for a hardcore off-roader, the 2022 Land Rover Defender definitely makes a strong case here as the car is now offered as a powerful, practical, and a fun to drive car. The powertrain is smooth and the gear shifts are smooth. The cabin is loaded with all the bells and whistles and the cabin too is very comfortable. The design of the car looks exclusive, giving it a massive road presence. The quality levels, just like all other cars, are impressive and the on-road driving dynamics too are much better now. However, all of the fun comes at a certain price. The 2022 Land Rover Defender will have a starting price tag of just under $50,000 however, the latest iteration certainly feels worth the price.
